A Profile of an Alumni

Lalbahadur (Lal) Balkaran, CIA, CGA, MBA, FCMA, FCIS

Lal Balkaran is a Certified Internal Auditor, Certified General Accountant, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants of the UK, and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in Canada. He also holds an MBA from Heriot-Watt University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Mr. Balkaran has had over twenty five years of senior finance and varied internal auditing experience obtained in a wide range of industries in Guyana, Barbados, and Canada. He has had articles published in several international journals including five in the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA)'s own prestigious Internal Auditor . On top of this, he has authored six reference books on international professional accounting and business certification programs, one on management controls, one by Butterworths called A Practical Guide to Auditing & Related Terms , and six non-business books.

In addition, he has taught courses in Auditing, IS Auditing, Quantitative Techniques, Financial Accounting, and Management Accounting for several professional bodies and two universities. He was an external examiner to two Commonwealth universities (the University of Guyana and the University of the West Indies - Cave Hill).

Mr. Balkaran has been active with the Toronto Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors for over 20 years where he eventually was elected President in 2002 and again in 2003. He has also done several seminars in North America and the Caribbean on internal auditing related topics. He is a committee member of the Board of Research and Education Advisors of the Institute of Internal Auditors (International) and a member of the Internal Auditor Editorial Advisory Board. Mr. Balkaran was a member of the Internal Audit Advisory Board of the Treasury Board of Canada (an initiative of the Government of Canada to have an internal audit activity in each government agency). He is also the founder of the Guyana chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors .
